7 Benefits of owning a dog

Imagine coming home to a wagging tail and joyful bark, your loyal companion waiting to shower you affectionately; this is just one benefit of owning a dog.

A dog is everyone’s best friend. You can depend on them to be with you every step of the way, from daily walks in the park to chilling on the couch watching a movie after a stressful day.

Research has shown that having a four-legged friend can help improve your physical and mental health.

If you have ever considered adding a furry friend to your family, here are seven reasons you should own a dog.

Your dog will help you get your daily exercise

According to No bones about it: Dogs are good for your health study, and your energetic pet is the perfect motivator for embracing the great outdoors. Imagine starting your day basking in the fresh morning air, strolling alongside your dog, who is just as excited to explore as you are.

As a devoted dog owner, you’ll be thrilled to discover seven dog-friendly hikes near Ottawa, each offering you and your companion a unique adventure.

There are trails for all levels of hikers. For example, you can take a 1.5-km walk at Chapman Mills Conservation Area. Alternatively, you can try an 8.3-km hike at Wolf Trail (Trail 62) in Gatineau Park.

While you may not think that this daily physical activity makes a lot of difference, a UK study found that dog owners are four times more likely to meet daily exercise goals than people who don’t have a canine companion.

Keeps your healthy

While getting outside and walking is one way to stay healthy, your dog can help keep you in good health in many other ways.

Dog ownership has been linked to a possible reduction in heart disease, according to a 2019 study published by the American Heart Association. While there is no conclusive evidence, studies have shown that people who own dogs are less likely to get heart disease.

These are just a few ways your furry friend can keep your family members healthy. According to a 2015 Swedish study, having a dog in the house with young children can help reduce the chance of asthma if they live with a dog during their first year of life.

Your pet can help reduce stress

Imagine coming home after a stressful day to be met with your best friend at the door. Their joy at seeing you come home can help reduce your stress and anxiety.

Research shows that spending 10 minutes petting your pup can significantly reduce your cortisol levels, which are your stress hormones.

Elevate your mood at work

Remember when we mentioned dogs are great stress relievers? They can do that in the office as well.

A few moments with your dog can be incredibly soothing if you come out of a stressful meeting. A quick walk or a cuddle session can significantly lower stress levels, not just for you but also for your colleagues.

Having your pet at work not only lifts your spirits but also adds a touch of cheer to the entire office atmosphere.

Added security

A dog at home may help you feel secure. They are known to have excellent listening skills and are often barking at movement outside your door before you realize anyone is there.

You don’t need a guard dog to do this, but having one has some added security benefits.

Guard dogs can scare off criminals and protect livestock, property and families from threats. They are loyal to their families, but just because they are working doesn’t mean they aren’t friendly and fun dogs.

If you decide to get a guard dog, ensure they receive proper training to guard only when needed.

Dogs make us more social

Along with all the added health benefits of having a dog, they can make you more social.

Dogs are natural social magnets, encouraging interactions with fellow dog lovers. Imagine conversing or making new friends while spending the day at the sunny dog park.

Researchers found these spontaneous connections often lead to lasting friendships and a stronger sense of community. For introverts, dogs can act as icebreakers, making social interactions more comfortable and enjoyable.

Dogs can make us more attractive

All pet owners know that their canine is the perfect wingman, but your pup by your side may be the reason for this extra attention.

A series of experiments found that when a man asked for a woman’s number, he had more luck when he had his dog with him than when he was alone.

The “puppy love effect” shows that dogs are more than pets. They can start conversations and bring people together, possibly leading to new relationships.

Remember to include pictures of you and your pup in your dating profile. A 2015 survey by Match.com found that more than half of the surveyed people thought that having a pet made the person more attractive.

So, the next time you’re out and about with your dog, remember that they’re not just your pet — they’re your wingman.
